I don't know anymore if what I relay will be what was written and shown, or what I walked away with - so I warn you of that now. But her character was a girl, who I believe was adopted and then her parents had a child of their own. Which was fine, except her little sister adored her and one day while practicing swimming, she just wasn't having a tag a long. So she swam ahead and didn't realize her little sister was really in trouble - and the child drowned.
She's black/mixed, but her little sister was white. And I believe her parents were white. And there was all this guilt about costing them their real child - and a kind of spiral down to a place where she needed to be at the emotional growth program.
I liked her because she was middle class searching for an identity - after an incident that she subconsciously interpreted as - 'wanting self identity is bad'. She was searching for a way to be a 'good girl' instead of just being herself, and she kept lashing out when the two clashed.
It was not tv-dramatic the way some of the other storylines were - though they were all within the realm of realistic. But her storyline nicely paralleled the storylines of the -adults-, in that whole 'What do I do now that I'm supposedly better'. And I liked that aspect a lot too.
I loved that show a lot, but I have no idea if I'll be disappointed should I find it to watch again. I don't think so as a couple of years ago there was someone who had the transcripts online and re-reading the stories was just as revolutionary for me (in that there were kids out there as screwed up as I was and there were people willing to help them and believe in them). But I was also far less critical of tv when I first watched it and the last time I reread the episodes.

You might not want to, though, as people appear mostly made of fail when we discuss, well, legitimate readings of text.
