It's this influential woman's birthday! There's a stunning five-part article on her and I think it a must read. It's great article that not only tackles the so-called Yoko problem but puts Yoko at not only the center of the story most commonly told about her, but at the transformation in art and media that took place in the 60's.

There're discussions on it at earth-tone and [livejournal.com profile] sex_and_race.

I enjoyed that a lot. As an old-school Beatles fan, I liked them despite their atrocious treatment of their women. My bad. But this article really lays on the line that most discussions of Yoko should be headlined:

"Japanese Feminist Female Makes The Baby Beatles Cry! God is Displeased! News now, later and forever!"

The whole thing with John being "brainwashed" by Yoko was to try and explain how a Northern Englishman born during WWII could have EVER changed his tune regarding his awful behavior toward women. Surely there were heavy drugs involved! Yes! He's lost his MIND!

Too bad none of the other Beatles ever lost theirs. And yes, Paul was the true twat of the Beatles. That's sort of the worst kept secret in Beatledom.

PS: My father, a painter and art-lover, owned "Grapefruit", Yoko's pre-John book, before she was ever 'famous' and called her a great artist. He had no idea she was married to John Lennon - how funny is that.

I didn't know much about the Beatles so it was enlightening to read about how they treated women. I knew that the musicians of the time didn't view women as much of anything and that Yoko was and is hated, but I didn't know how bad the Beatles were.

Being the wife or girlfriend of an artist is something I have thought about however. As much as I like to think that things have improved, and I'm sure they have on some level, I'm well aware that I have to be careful.

Oh how cool!! My brother took me to an exhibit of her work at the Walker Art Museum. I was resistant to go, because 'Oh no Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles blah blah blah'. I was so incredibly wrong.

That was some of the most amazing art I'd ever seen. Some of it was serious and some of it was laugh out loud playful. Really powerful stuff.
