I think the pics are beautiful. Unfortunately, I've been warned off the book (of the same name) by some folk I trust.

Any particular reasons why? I read an interview with McDonnell and I wasn't quite feeling it. I thought it was mostly because I'm looking for something in the wrong place, or maybe I was being unfair and I should try to read it later anyway.

But I just now read someone's criticism and the author's response to it which confirmed some of my suspicions and was just full of WTF. I don't care how complex and nuanced the story is, if ultimately, at the end of the day, White is Right.

Well, from what my friend told me, the main character goes from being fairly independent in mind and spirit to some shadow of a character who betrays her principles with a guy who basically wanted her and broke a bunch of cultural rules to get her.

I originally was going to give it a pass (w/out reading) because I'm not a big fan of Christian fiction but when I went to WisCon I almost changed my mind. I figured, Black author, I should support. However, my friend was like, "No, don't do it," and then gave a detailed rundown. And apparently, the author doesn't cotton to what she perceives as a negative review. I figure I just need to run far away.

This is ugly.

Hunh.

Okay. I may try to read it anyhow. But thanks for the heads-up.
