As to lj being quiet about it, lj has about twice the number of women on it as it does men, but most of those women are white and No. 1 Ladies is set in Botswana, about a traditionally built African woman of uncommon intellect and extraordinary mind, who loves her country and herself and is surrounded by interested (in her) and beautiful black people.
There are no pretty white boys to slash in this show.
Oh good, I'd assumed there was some depiction-of-africa issues that had blown up when the feature length thing had been broadcast, and that I'd missed it, because the reasons you state had limited how far it could be conveyed via the intertubes.
I certainly LOLed at some of the "criticism" from the major newspapers though.
Man, just as I was thinking, "I need a new uncrappy tv show." I don't know why I kept thinking the work on this show was far in the future. Now, I must haz.
