Food is so important. When I make something from my country, I make it for myself. When I find someone who will take and eat from my hand, and not come out with some racist, evil, othering, filth from their mouth, I am happy.
And yet, there is much about homecooking from back home that discomfits me, even though all cooking traditions of my home have strengthened my bones.
I adored the tension between her dislike of swallow, and the comfort she took in being bosomed in her family, even while she ate rice and they didn't.

(And yet she could eat unpounded yams. The human digestive system is such a mystery.)
