Wow. She's beautiful. I like the look of the 20s hairstyle though I can't imagine what you'd actually have to do to your hair to get it to do that. Yikes!
I asked because I wanted to show that to witchwillow who's put together her own personal People of Color Fantasy Cast: Stargate Universe. (http://witchwillow.livejournal.com/564033.html).
This woman is beautiful. I'm loving the twenties hairdo too. I actually was able to get my hair like this one time, it involved marcel curlers (the kind that go on the stove), setting lotion, and hair gel.
Sadly, I don't have pictures this would have been about 4 or 5 years ago, but I did write a tutorial for my then blog. I wonder if this could work on natural hair, like if I flat ironed it and put it in big rollers if I could acheive the same look.
I have tried wet setting, but because my curl pattern isn't consistent enough I really have a hard time with it. I mean like in the back there are spiral curls, but in the front it's looser and on the left and right in the middle there are curls that face different directions. It's not uniform, so whenever I wet set the front will be okay and the back will try, but the middle is horrible. If someone did it for me, it would be possible. But this is why I think I would need to flat iron first, and then use rollers. Maybe I will try it. I thought it looked pretty good. I only have about 12 inches of hair so I want to wait until it's a little longer.
Wait, flat iron before or after the wet set? And yeah, seems like your hair has all sorts of goodness going on, but you have certain spots that will not cooperate with group projects.
Why do you think having someone else wet set your hair in the middle improve it?
I wouldn't do the wet set, I'd flat iron it instead and then set it on big rollers with just a little bit of lottabody, that's another technique that older beauticians used. Then what they would do is unroll the hair and train it into a marcel/body wave or a loose fingerwave (just make sure to use a lot of bobby pins).
I think having someone else wet set my hair would probably be better especially if they were experienced they'd be able to tell exactly where the different hairtypes are and set it accordingly. They'd also probably be willing to comb it more than I would (my arms get tired after I finish the right side of my head). I let Joga flatiron it once and he got it straighter than I could.
Oh, okay, now I get it. I did not know about the flat-iron + wet set. That seems so labor intensive, but it explains so many of the beautiful set waves I'd see in older pictures.
The thing with wet-setting, given the right rattail comb and practice, I found that I was excellent at it (for my own head) aside from fatigue. Maybe if Joga practiced wet-setting? There are so many different types of curlers, too...
