If you want to help, try the following organizations. Some of them I have used myself, and others are favored by people whose opinion I trust. By no means is this list exhaustive. Also, waiting to see which organization's donations will be met with matching funds might also be a good idea.

1. Doctors w/o Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.)

2. Donate via Charity Navigator
Links, guidelines, and information to charities/ngos/organizations with ties to Haiti.

3. Bethlehem Ministry
The clinic is where a friend of mine volunteered in Haiti. (They're a physician. We did our undergrads together.)
It was not directly touched by the earthquake, but, already limited resources will no longer be allocated to it. It will need even more help.

4. The National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH)
Founded in 1991 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization in response to the Haitian refugee crisis resulting from political instability in Haiti.

5. Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees
Dedicated to providing a variety of services to the Haitian community of New York City, this organization also coordinates efforts in southern Haiti and the Dominican Republic. With two full-time staff and fifteen volunteers, the organization provides English classes for its predominantly English-limited immigrant community, helps develop microenterprises, resettles refugees, advocates on behalf of domestic workers fighting for fair wage demands, and organizes advocacy campaigns.

6.CRWRC
Another friend worked with them for about five years. Their family lived in Haiti and is Haitian. ETA: Last I heard, all their staff is accounted for and they're set up to help right now.

7.Yele
Wyclef Jean's charity. Please text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to YELE HAITI.Your money will help with relief efforts; visit the website; or, drop off clothing/canned goods/water/$ for Yele Haiti Org @ House of Art Gallery, 373 Lewis Ave#BK in NYC.

8. GHESKIO
The Haitian Group for the Study of Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections) is a Haitian non-governmental organization dedicated to clinical service, research, and training in HIV/AIDS and related diseases that partners with Cornell University. My friend, who I lived with for a year and a half, says she knows one CU student who is there now.

9. Partners in Health
Zanmi Lasante is PIH's flagship clinic, and has been providing community based health care in Haiti since 1985.

10. FOKAL
My coz says it's legit. They're safe, but are waiting to hear on their household.

I'm getting my news from family members via telephone and fb. Oh! If you're on facebook, you might want to look at

*hugs*

I -knew- I'd forgotten to check in with someone but I couldn't remember who. First thing I did was email my ex and ask about her family.

I hope you hear something soon. Meanwhile PLEASE avoid any link where someone even half mentions Pat Robertson, apparently he's spewing foolishness (I did not click). But just so you know, he's not saying prayers.

I haven't heard back from her yet - left a voice mail message a little while ago. I'll let you know when I do - can only help to know that someone found a way to get answers, yes?

When I was younger I had that thought myself, that people seemed to worship and fear the Devil more than G-d. As an adult I think it's because they can understand the Devil better. Humans understand punishment, fear tactics, intimidation & bullying, torture and pain - unconditional love and support? Not so much.

[personal profile] netmouse 2010-01-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for the links!

Have you seen This article about donating to Yele?

The most crucial line to me is this one: "As for text-message donations—that money never hits the account until the person who sent them pays their cell phone bill weeks later, a circumstance that affects charities large and small alike."

So whether to Yele or to any other group, much better to donate directly than through text messages (though better to text a donation than to make none, of course).
