(tm [livejournal.com profile] delux_vivens who's kicked it off with "because real orcs love the sweet taste of manflesh....", which has spread to Wednesday = Manflesh Day, More Pretty Men of Color Picspam Wednesday, Manflesh and Men Of Color Manflesh - Rock Edition.)

Spare me the food analogies. Otherwise, link back or comment with pic spam appropriate to this post. Safe for work only, please. :)

...I think when I write essays I’m out to do on the page what we can’t do in the media. We don’t have billions of dollars that are available to these people who do what amounts to a propaganda attack on us. We’re being out propagandized. When I look at the newspapers, I’m furious. Because I can see where the interpretation of who we are and how people from the outside define us.

My friend Cecil Brown is very upset because the SF Chronicle is doing a Black History Month series and it’s all White male writers! I mean they assign Black History Month to all White writers with all these African American writers in the Bay Area and in California? I mean I’m here and I’ve written for them. And of course, they wrote about the kind of black image that appeals to them: Athletes and Entertainers. Not a single scientist, or inventor. I was down at Lockheed Martin, addressing the Black employees: Engineers and Scientists. I told them that a lot of the space equipment used by NASA was invented by Black scientists, yet when Mailer wrote that dumb book about the moonshot he said that Blacks were jealous of this White achievement.

The formula for sending a shuttle into space and bringing it back was devised by a Black woman scientist.

Junot Diaz won the Pulitzer prize for his fanboy loving, nigger-reclaiming (he gets to use that word), excellent-in-all-its-parts novel The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. (Published by Penguin. Not Tor. Hmmm.)

Anyhow, several of his short stories can be found at The New Yorker. And while they aren't all speculative, they do focus on unicorns, people of color. Wao. Wow.

I'm thinking, maybe the price to be paid for turning entire people groups, and its members, into narrative tropes that glorify manifest destiny and colonization--and persisting in this-- is that when the metanarrative begins to magnify the humanity of all people-- not only the white ones-- the hidebound genre elides itself.

x-posted, with changes, to earth tone.

I'm looking for ident information on this pair, though. It'd be nice to see a version in t-shirts and chinos, though. P'raps jeans.

Mercy. I didn't know that Joo Ji Hoon and Kim Jae Wook were starring in Antique together. So much nice. I think both men are gorgeous and hilarious. And the movie's set in a bakery. So, yeah. Joy. Il y a un homme superbe qui parle de ses pâtisseries aussi. Ça me fait plaisir.
